In the past seven centuries, the synagogue was converted into a church, a hospital, an orphanage, and most recently a bar. Despite objections about a lack of archaeological evidence, the Utrera city council bought the building for 460,000 euros in 2016. Researchers began an investigation of the structure in November 2021. They identified the synagogue's prayer hall and the Torah Ark area where the scriptures were kept. The city council now aims to open the site to visitors while the researchers continue to search for the synagogue's pulpit and ritual bath. Xinhua News
